Prior to my conversion, I had ordered a set of Tefillin Dakkot from an online company. Less than a year later, the Tefillin starred to separate on the base. With the 10 year warranty that came with them, I contacted the company. More than a month later the Tefillin are still being held by customs in Israel. The CSRs have been less than helpful and I've decided that I should probably just consider a learning experience and buy a new set.
My questions are: is there a big difference between Dakkot and Gassot? I assume they're made the same way so what could the difference be between a 350$ set and 500$ ?
simple explanation of the differences - basically, gassot cost the earth because they are harder to make - being all one piece of leather. Dakkot are made of cut pieces of leather, but then have a THIN layer of leather coated over them (probably why yours are coming apart). Gassot will cost more. A good set will start over $500 almost certainly - OTOH, you will probably never have to buy another set!
